Caring for Our Community ... With You

2025 Impact Report
Building a Healthier Community, One Gift at a Time

You Are the Caring Tradition

Every dollar you donate stays local to help patients, families, caregivers, and community members. Together, we are fighting cancer, feeding hungry children and families, and creating opportunity for the caregivers who are there for us. We are tackling our community's most pressing health challenges and working toward a future where everyone has access to the care they deserve. Below are a few stories of lives you touched this year. Thanks to you, we live in a community of caring, and that knowledge alone is healing.

Advancing Nursing Excellence

"At Sentara Martha Jefferson, front line nurses truly have a voice. Thanks to the support of our community, whether through scholarships that help us grow or resources that strengthen our practice, we're able to amplify those voices to make an even greater difference for the patients we serve." Melissa Proffitt, MSN, RN, NE-BC, Manager, Professional Practice and Magnet Program

Nursing excellence is the cornerstone of Sentara Martha Jefferson's Caring Tradition, which is why we invest more than $1 million in community support annually through the Haden Nursing Institute to improve patient care by empowering our nursing teams. Haden provides our nurse leaders with flexible resources, which can be deployed strategically to advance innovation, promote workplace safety, and transform care.

In 2025, our nurses advocated for and received equipment upgrades funded through Haden, including new vital sign machines that improve patient satisfaction and safety. Community support funded the replacement of newborn bassinets in our Mother-Baby Unit. Haden also makes possible nursing scholarships and advance practice opportunities that keep Sentara Martha Jefferson on the vanguard nationally, among an elite group of just 2% of hospitals nationwide to maintain Magnet designation, America's most prestigious nursing recognition, for 20 years running.

Childcare=Healthcare

"All our team members, including our nurses, are committed to serving this community, and they want to be here--but they can only do that if they have access to reliable, affordable and high-quality childcare." Pat Scherle, Vice President/Chief Nursing Officer

When it opens in early 2026, the YMCA Early Learning Center at Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital will ensure continued access to healthcare for our patients by providing affordable, high-quality childcare for our teams.  The Early Learning Center will serve 148 children ages infant to kindergarten in eight dedicated classrooms, plus outdoor classrooms and play spaces. Ensuring that our team is here to care for our community while their children remain close and safe means that our staff is work-ready, and their children are school-ready. Sentara staff will have priority enrollment, and tuition will be assessed on a sliding scale. To ensure that the Center is accessible and affordable to all staff, the Martha Jefferson Hospital Foundation is working to establish a $5 million endowment to support the Early Learning Center in perpetuity.

Inspiring the Next Generation of Providers

"This camp has given me the opportunity to see what my future career can look like." Camp Participant

To improve the health of our community, Sentara Martha Jefferson introduced nearly 1,400 local students to healthcare careers through field trips, summer camps, junior volunteer programs, and educational events made possible through community support. Second graders in Albemarle county learned that there are many careers beyond being a doctor or nurse at a hospital, while middle- and high -school students from all five surrounding counties got a hands-on introduction to the many good playing, rewarding healthcare job opportunities. Students also learned that scholarship support is available through the Haden Nursing Institute and the Center for Clinical Education to open the door to these career pathways.
