SMJH Celebrates Volunteers December 13, 2023

“A Shining Light in the Lives of Others.” This was the theme of the December 7 celebration of the nearly 300 adult and junior volunteers who donated 33,500 hours of service in 2023–3,000 more hours than were donated in 2022. That extraordinary contribution equates to more than $1,065,000. Thank you to each and every one of our volunteers! You are all valued members of our Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital family, and we are so grateful for all you do to care for our patients and support our teams.

We were also delighted to recognize Chris Camblos (center above) as our 2023 Volunteer of the Year. A retired SMJH team member, Chris returned to the hospital 8 years ago as a volunteer in Labor and Delivery. She welcomes patients at the front desk on Friday mornings–which is frequently the busiest time day of the week–and puts everyone at ease with her calm and welcoming demeanor. In the words of a longtime colleague, Chris’ presence “just seems to make everyone relax and smile.”

Check out our Flickr gallery for photos from the celebration, and contact Renee Dinwiddie if you would like to bring comfort to patients and families as a hospital volunteer.
